One of the martial arts taught at Gentry’s MMA and Fitness is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ for short, revolves around grappling and ground-fighting (Choke holds and joint locks). Before we get into the benefits of BJJ, let’s talk about the origins.

Here’s a short history lesson about the origins of BJJ-

BJJ was developed by the Gracie family after Carlos Gracie learned Judo from Mitsuyo Maeda. Carlos Gracie, the eldest brother, then passed on his knowledge to his younger brothers. Helio Gracie, the youngest and weakest brother, altered the techniques taught to him in order to make them work for his weaker body. Helio Gracie basically created BJJ through trial and error after learning Judo techniques from his brothers.

The effectiveness of BJJ became known after Royce Gracie won multiple matches in the first few UFC events (1993-1995). Afterwards, the popularity of BJJ skyrocketed. Everyone was wanting to learn how a man of an average build (Royce) was able to defeat much larger opponents.


Here are 3 benefits of taking Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu-

>>Self Defense- BJJ techniques are effective because they do not rely on size and strength. Instead it relies on good technique, timing, and leverage. With those three things, a BJJ practitioner is able to subdue a larger opponent by using chokes and joint locks.The techniques taught in BJJ have been proven to work many times. (via Gracie challenge, UFC, etc.)

>>Sport- There are numerous tournaments held throughout the year. So if you are thirsty for some competition, BJJ is for you. BJJ practitioners are able to test their skills against other competitors who are at their weight and skill level.

>>Fitness- Not only are BJJ practitioners learning self-defense, they are also getting in shape. A 170 lbs male burns about 700 calories in an hour of BJJ. The warm-ups and sparring sessions are also a great way to build some lean muscle, burn fat, and improve cardiovascular endurance.

Is BJJ safe?

  • Of course it is safe. We are not training to hurt each other. We are all training to help each other get better. The environment in Gentry’s is fun and safe!

Do I need prior experience?

  • Don’t worry about prior grappling experience. You won’t be thrown to the sharks. You’ll start in our “On-Ramp” class so that you can learn the basics before transitioning into the full BJJ class.
