What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
At Gentry’s, we view Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 3 parts:
- Martial Art – First and foremost BJJ is a Martial Art designed for self-defense. By maximizing the use of leverage through many techniques, a Jiu Jitsu practitioner is able to subdue his opponent by making them quit by applying a joint lock or choke. The Jiu Jitsu we practice is done without strikes (punches or kicks). This makes it the ideal martial art for children. If confronted by a bully at school, they are able to handle the attacker without getting suspended for punching and kicking.
- Sport – In the past 20 years the sport aspect of Jiu Jitsu has grown tremendously. Not only is it one of the must have components in a MMA fighters repertoire but, it’s also a sport in it’s own right. The best part about it is anyone can do it. Here at Gentry’s we have Women, Children and Men of all ages up to their late 40’s actively competing. To give you an idea of how big the sport has become, the Pan American Championship in California hosted almost 2,800 plus competitors in 2013.
- Fitness – There are many Jiu Jitsu hobbyist that train BJJ because they enjoy the physical benefits they get from participating. They are able to burn fat, develop lean muscle and increase their cardio and overall health. Not only do they get in great shape in a much more exciting atmosphere than a typical gym but, it’s also a great way to developing lasting friendships.
